I was so scared when I was younger. I never left the house because I was scared of other people. I wore men’s clothing because I was scared of my own body. I didn’t think about the future because it was a terrifying road to nowhere. I moved across the country with a boyfriend because it was less scary than staying where I was but striking out on my own. I was scared for a very long time, and I had to lose almost everything in order to stop being so scared. Thing is, I might not have almost lost it all if I hadn’t been so overwhelmingly afraid of living.

The world is a scary place, but you only hurt yourself by living in fear. Have the will. To wake up another day, to take another step: you must carve out a place for yourself. Be stubborn, make demands, take calculated risks, and — most importantly — take responsibility for your shit. Be more honest with yourself about yourself than anyone else.

And say whatever the fuck you want. Nothing you say is going to make the world end, so fuck all. When you wear a false face to others it is a cancer on your soul and a theft of their misplaced affection. Trust me, for every motherfucker out there who hates your guts, there is someone else who’ll love you to pieces.

Life isn’t a beauty pageant, and there is no prize for being Miss Congeniality. The only thing you have to be afraid of is wasting your fucking time.
